January Wrap-Up

January was my best month of reading in a long time. I read a total of 15 books, 10 print and 5 audio. My favorites in print were Scythe and The Woman in Cabin 10. For audio, Shadowshaper and the first two books of the Firebird series were really great. I had really high hopes for both Blankets and Kevin Kramer Starts on Monday, but both were underwhelming.

Veronica Mars The Thousand Dollar Tan Line – Rob Thomas & Jennifer Graham

thousand-dollar-tan-linePublisher: Vintage

Publication Date: March, 25, 2014

From the Jacket:

Ten years after graduating from high school in Neptune, California, Veronica Mars is back in the land of sun, sand, crime, and corruption. She’s traded in her law degree for her old private investigating license, struggling to keep Mars Investigations afloat on the scant cash earned by catching cheating spouses until she can score her first big case.

Now it’s spring break, and college students descend on Neptune, transforming the beaches and boardwalks into a frenzied, week-long rave. When a girl disappears from a party, Veronica is called in to investigate. But this is no simple missing person’s case; the house the girl vanished from belongs to a man with serious criminal ties, and soon Veronica is plunged into a dangerous underworld of drugs and organized crime. And when a major break in the investigation has a shocking connection to Veronica’s past, the case hits closer to home than she ever imagined.

I was a HUGE fan of Veronica Mars growing up and watched the television show religiously. Like many others, I was devastated when it ended, so it surprises me to no end that I only just saw the movie a few days ago. I blame the fact that I have 459 children to tend to. The movie was perfect and watching it made me want to binge watch every episode of the show again, and to find out if there were any other plans for the future. In that search, I discovered that the show’s creator co-wrote two books, the first of which begins right where the movie leaves off.

I went to the library the very next morning and checked both out. I finished The Thousand Dollar Tan Line in less than a day. Thomas and Graham capture the characters as perfectly in print as they do on screen. I could hear Kirsten Bell in every quip and quirky one-liner. The same holds true for the other characters. The plot itself was intricate and fast-paced and kept me guessing until the very end. Fans of Veronica Mars will not be disappointed and should go out now and grab a copy. I read that the audio version is narrated by Kristen Bell who does a fabulous job. I wasn’t able to get my hands on that, but was still pleased with the print version.

I’m about to start the second book, Mr. Kiss and Tell, and I hope there are more to come in the future. If you like Veronica Mars, you’ll love this book. If you have no idea what Veronica Mars is, please rectify that immediately. If you’re a mega fan like me, please comment below so we can fangirl together.

Memorable Quotes:

There weren’t many people in this world who would let you be vulnerable and still believe you were strong.

The twin pillars of outrage journalism: slut shaming and victim blaming.

No doubt, what with all that graft and corruption filling your schedule.
